Former Buffalo Sabres Goalie Ryan Miller Retiring at the End of the Season

He was one of the best goalies to suit up for the Buffalo Sabres.  Today he's announced that he's calling it a career at the end of the season.

It was one of those moments in history where I'll never forget where I was when I heard the news that it was happening.  People were talking about how the Sabres were getting ready to part ways with goalie Ryan Miller but in the back of my mind I kept on praying that somehow it wouldn't happen.  Then it did.

I was on my way to Chef's for dinner with the family when it came over the radio that a blockbuster trade had been made between the Buffalo Sabres and the St. Louis Blues for Ryan Miller and Steve Ott.  The Sabres got Jaroslav Halak, Chris Stewart, William Carrier, a 2015 first-round draft pick and a 2016 third-round pick.

It was heartbreaking to see him go.  He was drafted by Buffalo.  He really felt like a Buffalo guy and it felt like he always would be.

According to The Athletic, Miller was the winningest American Goalie in the NHL.  He's got 390 career wins.  In March his 3-2 win over Arizona moved him on the list past another guy we know well here in Buffalo  - Dominik Hasek.  He was a silver medalist at the 2010 Olympics and won 284 games here in Buffalo.

Today, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks announced that he would be hanging up his skates at the end of the season.

After leaving Buffalo for St. Louis, Miller continued to play for Vancouver and Anaheim.  It may be true that Miller is no longer here in Buffalo.  But he will always feel like a Buffalo guy to me.
