It’s time once again for our Hometown Hero, brought to you by Batavia Downs Gaming with help from our friends at WNY Heroes who help us with our nominations every week.  This week, our Hometown Hero from Hamburg, NY serves in the United States Army.  It’s SSgt Garrett Jackson!

In 2009 Jackson enlisted in Active Duty in the U.S. Army and shortly after he was sent to, Fort Benning GA.  Upon graduating Basic Combat Training and Infantry Training, he was stationed at Fort Campbell KY. The home of the 101st Airborne is where he received additional training in Modern Army Combatives Level One& Two Courses, Warrior’s Leader Course, Team Leader’s Course and Combat Life Savers Course.

In May, 2010 Jackson deployed to Nangahar, Province Afghanistan with First Brigade Combat Team 101ST Airborne (1BCT) as a RTO. Jackson insured proper communications between all echelons of command from ground elements to get all required support needed for mission success.  He also took part in being a member of the personal security detachment for the command group. During that year long deployment he received a battlefield promotion to Specialist.  At the beginning of May of 2011 he returned back to Fort Campbell, KY and began to retrain for deployment in 2012.

In Oct, 2012 Jackson deployed a 2nd time to Nangahar, Province Afghanistan with Bravo Company 1-327TH Infantry, 101st Airborne as a Team Leader/ Lead Gunner.  As a team leader, Jackson was responsible for three other soldiers and their safety making sure those soldiers were prepared for what was to happen in combat.  He also was the lead gunner for over 180 vehicle patrols that his platoon conducted during that deployment. He was responsible for conducting checks over all the gunners and ensuring that heavy weapons were at 100% and vehicles did not have any issues prior to conducting patrols. Jackson reenlisted during that time in Afghanistan for an additional three years of service in the U.S. Army. In late July 2013, he returned back to Fort Campbell and received orders to go to the United States Army Recruiting School, and attended Advanced Leaders Course. SSG Jackson is still a proud member of the U.S. Army.
