Every game is even more important in this year's lockout shortened season especially at home and the Buffalo Sabres are off to a good start. The Sabres scored three power play goals while Thomas Vanek was in on all five Buffalo goals in a 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers Sunday afternoon at First Niagara Center. Vanek scored twice and assisted on all three other goals for a five-point game.

Newcomer Steve Ott didn’t waste any time getting his first goal in a Buffalo uniform, scoring midway thru the first period on the power play. Tyler Myers and Cody Hodgson had the other Buffalo goals while Ryan Miller stopped 27 shots.

The turning point in the game came late in the second period with the score tied 2-2, when Drew Stafford took on Flyers’ bruiser Scott Hartnell after Hartnell slammed Tyler Ennis into the boards. It ignited the Sabres to a 3-goal third period while the Flyers wilted.

It’s right back to work for the Sabres when they play in Toronto Monday night.
