For those who live in parts of Western New York, there seems to be a growing issue with the taste of the water they are getting from their taps and faucets. The summer and early fall were extremely dry and this is just another addition to the ongoing water woes.

I noticed that the posts online were growing and getting more and more comments about the nasty taste of water and it appears that Erie County has now addressed it.

In a recent post on Facebook, the Erie County Water Authority said: "This is a common occurrence this time of year. Certain conditions exist and compounds can be produced which may impact odor and taste. It is important to understand that these conditions are harmless and pose no threat to human health and safety".

I remember when I was a kid the water taste was also bad at various times of the year and the explanation was that the taste was from Zebra mussels that were in Lake Erie.

Zebra mussels are found in fresh water, like Lake Erie and "Zebra mussels probably arrived in the Great Lakes in the 1980s via ballast water that was discharged by large ships from Europe".

The consensus is that the water taste like mold or stale. In a post on Nexdoor, Kathleen said, "It's disgusting and I have been drinking only bottled water for the last week".

For those who are concerned and want to improve the taste of their water, Erie County went on to note that,"These naturally occurring conditions can be mitigated by chilling water, adding ice, or even adding a slice of lemon".
