How To Know If You’re Sitting Next To A New Yorker On A Plane
They're estimating that 45 million people will be flying over the next couple of days. if you're flying, how will you know you're sitting next to a New Yorker?
The answer is, if they have naughty habits, there's a good chance they're a New Yorker. Now, that doesn't mean that all New Yorkers are nasty. I'm a New Yorker myself, and I wouldn't say I have naughty habits while I travel. But, there was a study done recently to find out which states had people with the naughtiest travel habits, and New Yorkers came in near the top.
What are some of the naughtiest travel habits?
Every year, Solitaire Bliss puts together a list of America’s Naughtiest Travel Habits. There are a ton of them. The study involved surveying residents in every state and asking about the common habits they are guilty of themselves, what habits they have observed, their overall opinions on airline etiquette, and more. They counted everything from wearing too much perfume and cologne to passing gas in their seats. They're all the things that other passengers don't want to be around when they're confined on an airplane.
The full list of naughty habits included:
- Hanging legs in the aisle
- Wearing strong perfume or cologne
- Putting your bags on seats in the terminal (so others can't sit down)
- Drinking too much
- Not putting your phone on airplane mode
- Passing gas in the seat or cabin
- Asking to switch seats on the plane
- Asking to cut a line in security
- Bringing strong smelling food on the plane
- Ignoring the seatbelt sign
- Lying down in the terminal
- Using both armrests if not in the middle seat
- Reclining your seat without asking
- Leaving garbage in the seat pocket
- Having a verbal confrontation with others
- Pushing on the seat in front of you
How naughty are New York's travel habits?
New York actually didn't do so well. They came in 4th when it comes to having naughty habits. The worst habits we have in New York are wearing too much/too strong cologne or perfume and reclining our seats without asking.
If I'm being honest, I didn't realize it was etiquette to have to ask about the seat. If airlines didn't want you to be able to recline them, why do they have that feature on them in the first place?
