The last year in Western New York has been very interesting, to say the least.

From a horrific terrorist attack to two once-in-a-lifetime snowstorms, the Bills getting knocked out of the playoffs (again), the coldest temperatures that the region has seen in years, and now an earthquake. We've reached a point where so many people are wondering what else can happen.

Earthquakes in Western New York aren't that uncommon considering that there is a major series of fault lines that sit right in our backyard. The earthquake that hit Buffalo on Monday, February 6, 2023, was the strongest one to hit the Buffalo area in a while.

Officials from the United States Geological Survey are investigating the earthquake and gathering information to help them better detect and track future quakes. To add that effort, they are looking for your help in determining the total intensity of the earthquake.

Did You Feel The Earthquake?

The USGS Earthquake Hazards Program is seeking people to respond to their Felt Report survey, which is a series of questions that help officials track exactly how strong the earthquake was, how far the shakes were felt, was there any damage to person or property, and other things along those lines. It's a free survey that is 100% optional.

More than 1 million people have completed the reports and the data is used to create maps that show what people experienced and the extent of damage that occurred in an area. It also helps officials separate the impacts of earthquakes from other events that may feel like an earthquake, like sonic booms, trucks, explosions, and/or mine blasts.

So, if you felt the M3.8 Buffalo earthquake, help the USGS out and fill out a Did You Feel It? survey.
