It's no secret that there are many unhealthy foods sold in the United States. Other countries have bans on many of the ingredients food manufacturers add to their products here in America. Even food that seems like it is natural may have hidden additives, dyes, preservatives, conditioners, and other chemicals added. Canada and Europe for instance do not allow many ingredients that are readily permitted and used in our food.

I am the person who reads the labels of about 98 percent of what I consume. My general rule is if I can't pronounce it, I'm not eating it. Even if I can pronounce it, I often still Google ingredients to see what they are and what potential side effects it may have. The food industry is all about profit, so many companies will substitute a cheaper, but potentially toxic ingredient to save money.

What Is Red Dye No. 3?

I don't know if it's just me, but it always seems like there is a ban or recall on food ingredients that were previously approved. It's almost like we are the lab rats, in real time. The FDA has placed a ban on red dye no. 3, which is popularly used in a variety of food products. On January 15, 2025, the FDA revoked authorization for the use of red dye no. 3, which is a synthetic food coloring. According to the FDA,

"The Delaney Clause, enacted in 1960 as part of the Color Additives Amendment to the FD&C Act, prohibits FDA authorization of a food additive or color additive if it has been found to induce cancer in humans or animals."

In 1980, a study found that red dye no. 3 caused cancer in lab rats. Manufacturers will need to be in full compliance by January 15, 2027. Be sure to check labels in the meantime.
