The plight of runaway, missing, and exploited children has been in the news a lot lately, given the things that have happened on the national level all around the country. Child trafficking is a big problem all over the world, and, unfortunately, large port states like New York end up being a conduit through which children and teens who run away from home sometimes end up being trafficked to other areas of the nation, or even to other countries.
To help combat that, a coalition of law enforcement agencies, NGO's, and non-profits around the nation teamed up to run an operation that was able to rescue dozens of missing kids.
The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, in partnership with the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, National Child Protection Task Force, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the United States Marshal Service, 914Cares, and other organizations were able to find 43 missing kids and teens in New York's 43 Westchester County.
Missing Child Operation Rescues 43 Children and Teens In Westchester Co
The nearly 4 dozen kids and teens that were rescued range in age from 8 to 17, many of whom have been missing for months.
Every missing child case represents a young person who deserves to be safe, supported and seen... This operation brought together an extraordinary group of law enforcement, nonprofit and private partners to share information, pursue new leads and connect children with the services they need.
-Rossana Rosado, Commissioner of New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services
According to the NYS Office of Children and Family Services, more than 10,000 kids under the age of 18 were reported missing across the state in 2025. While a large chunk of children were located and either returned home or given safe accommodations, there are still more than 1,000 active cases of missing kids statewide.
Data from the Child Crime Prevention & Safety Center shows that more than 350,000 kids go missing every year in America.
