The Most Ticketed Construction Zone Near Buffalo, New York
There is no doubt we have reached that point of the year when construction cones replace snowbanks across Western New York.
Warmer weather is finally beginning to show up, trees are starting to bud, and signs of spring are everywhere. But perhaps one of the biggest signs that spring has officially arrived in Western New York is the fact that more drivers are now receiving traffic-related tickets for speeding through work zones.
Drivers Need To Stay Alert During Spring And Summer
When spring and summer arrive, it becomes more important than ever for drivers of cars and trucks to stay alert behind the wheel.

Kids are back outside riding bikes, walking to school, and running to neighborhood parks. Many times, children cross streets without paying close attention, which means drivers need to be extra cautious to help prevent pedestrian-related accidents.
At the same time, those on bicycles and motorcycles also need to stay aware. Drivers often do not see them, or simply are not looking carefully enough.
There is an old phrase that says, “Look twice and save a life.”
That message rings especially true this time of year as more motorcycles begin appearing on roads across Western New York and New York State.
Work Zone Speed Cameras Catching More Western New York Drivers
One area that seems to be causing concern lately is the increase in work zone speed limit tickets.
If you have driven the New York State Thruway, also known as I-90, near the Walden Galleria, you have likely noticed construction cones in place and Jersey barriers shifted farther away from the center median.
The speed limit has been reduced through that stretch, and camera-equipped enforcement vehicles are now monitoring driver speeds. Tickets are then mailed to drivers who are caught going too fast through the work zone.
According to posted signs in the area, fines are also doubled for drivers caught speeding in the active construction zone.
"A Notice of Liability will be mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle within 14 business days if the owner is a resident of New York State, and within 45 business days if the owner is not a New York State resident".
I have to admit, when driving through that area, it can be difficult to maintain the lower speed, especially if you are used to traveling that portion of the Thruway at 55 mph.
The Bigger Issue Is Worker Safety
While nobody wants to receive a costly speeding ticket, the larger issue is making sure the men and women working in these construction zones stay safe.
Think about the crews standing just feet away from moving traffic every single day. They want to finish their shift and return home safely to their families just like everyone else.
If all of us pay a little more attention and slow down when entering these areas, we can help protect workers, reduce accidents, and allow projects to get completed on time.
Expect More Construction Delays And Enforcement Across New York State
Pay close attention over the next several weeks and months as you drive around Western New York and across New York State.
Construction season is officially here.
That means more lane shifts, lower speed limits, work crews, and increased traffic enforcement in many areas.
If you want to avoid a hefty fine , and help keep everyone safe, the best thing you can do is obey the posted speed limit every time you enter a work zone.
