If you know anybody who gets migraine headaches you know it’s debilitating when they come. It often makes the person physically ill and they pretty much are out of action until they recover.

About 10 percent of people get migraines, but three times more women than men get them. They can be brought on by bright lights, stress, lack of food or sleep. For many it’s a lifelong affliction. It can be treated with medication. Some elect to get surgery. But it’s interesting that with all the research that’s been done, doctors still don’t know what it is in the body that causes migraines.

An interesting study is attempting to link ice cream brain freezes to migraines. A study in experimental biology was presented at a conference in San Diego in which people volunteered to give themselves a brain freeze in the hopes the results could lead to a breakthrough in migraine research. Scientists are hoping to use the measurement of blood flow the brain during a migraine to come to some conclusions about what’s happening at the time.

Here’s a link to a CNN/Health report on the study.
