Why Most Depressing Day Is Today In New York
Does today feel extra-gloomy already? You're not imagining things. Today is the gloomiest day of the year. Here is why...
Well, statistically it's the gloomiest day. But let's look on the bright side. It could turn out to be one of the best days of your life. Maybe just knowing that it's the gloomiest day and being prepared for it will help. Who knows?
Why is today the gloomiest day of the year?
Some people claim that the most depressing day of the year is what they call Blue Monday. It's the third Monday in January (which would be this upcoming Monday). But instead of generalizing, a company called Deye looked at 30 years of weather data to help determine the actual date.
They looked at things like the average temperature and cloud cover in each state to make their conclusion. The average coldest day in New York is January 29th. The average day with the largest amount of cloud cover in New York is January 3rd. That will change year to year, but after taking the data and averaging it, they found that today (January 16th) is the gloomiest day of the year in New York State.
The weather isn't the only thing that makes this the gloomiest day
While weather does have a huge impact on how we feel, that's not the only factor that makes people feel gloomy. Think about what we just went through. Christmas is all about happiness and cheer and now we are a couple of weeks away from that. It won't be back for months. So the come down from the holidays is a contributing factor.
Many people have just realized that they are going to quit their New Year's resolutions. Bills from the holidays are coming due. Money is short, and it might appear like spring is forever away.
What can you do to avoid being depressed?
First of all, realize that everyone is going through this. It's not just you. We're all in the same boat here.
Then, you can embrace it. The weather is going to be gross? Stay inside. Call off from work and just stay home. You could make some comfort food in the crock pot and just binge watch your favorite show all day. Find ways to take the worst day of the year and make it the best!
Good luck.
