New 2025 Law is Huge For Parents in New York State
If you are a parent here in New York State there is a huge, new law that is happening.
New York State is the first in the United States to do this. If you are a mom and have to go to an appointment when you are pregnant, there is coverage for you so you can take time and still get paid. If you have to go to a class for new parents, you can also take some paid leave to do so.
This goes into law on January 1, 2025.
The biggest question is if this is the same thing as Paid Family Leave AFTER you have a baby. The answer is no. It is a completely separate benefit that New York State is doing.
What are expectant mothers getting in 2025 with the new law?
- 20 hours of paid leave for pregnancy-related healthcare
What are the Pregnancy-related health appointments/situations that are covered:
- Physical examinations
- Medical procedures
- Monitoring
- Testing
- Discussions with a health care provider needed to ensure a healthy pregnancy
- Fertility treatment
- End of pregnancy care
Governor Hochul is committing to make sure that parents do not sacrifice proper care for a paycheck. "The paid prenatal leave benefits are in addition to New York State Paid Family Leave, existing employer-provided leave and existing sick leave benefits, ensuring workers can receive the health care needed to address all pregnancy related care to create healthy outcomes without jeopardizing their employment or finances. The law applies to all private employers in New York State, with no minimum employee threshold, and is applicable to both full-time and part-time employees", according to the New York State website.
