As more and more cell phones begin to roam New York State, more new phone numbers are needed.

Just as we've seen happen in other areas of New York State, New York City is going to need to add a new area code.

Think of how many phone numbers you've had associated with your name in the last couple of years.  There are about 20 million people in New York.  I realize that not everyone of those people has had their own phone number, but even if you cut that number in half, we would still need a huge number of phone numbers to give to everyone.

In 2001, New York added 585 to cover the Eastern side of Buffalo and Rochester area.  In 2017, 680 was added in the Syracuse area.  Iin 2022, it was 329 in the mid-Hudson region.

Now, they're adding another area code to cover the New York City area.

"There is a clear need for more telephone numbers as a result of economic growth and activity in the New York City metro areas, therefore, an additional area code is required," - New York State Public Service Commission Chair Rory M. Christian

The New York State Public Service Commission approved the petition by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator.  So the new area code will cover the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the Marble Hill neighborhood of Manhattan.

If you live in that area and you're worried about having to get a new number, don't be.  They say that the new telephone numbers would be assigned the new area code once the supply of central office codes under the existing area code exhausts.
