Get Ready for the Northern Lights in New York State
It's been downright cold and miserable for New York State the last two weeks.
Lake effect snowstorms, passing snow showers and even blizzard conditions have been the story since last weekend. Arctic cold temperatures were a huge story too, with wind chills into the single digits and even negative single digits last week.
The good news is that Monday and Tuesday will be warmer, both in the low 30's for highs. Then we reach the 40's and even potentially the 50's by Thursday and Friday. It's a huge warm up and we also could see a light show tonight and tomorrow.
The NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center says that the public should not be worried, but a coronal mass ejection from the sun on Sunday will cause the Aurora Borealis to be seen in Canada and some U.S. states; otherwise known as the Northern Lights.
A coronal mass ejection is the sun's ejection of plasma and other material, which reaches the Earth less than 24 hours later and then the particles in the northern hemisphere give off an a glow of light, which is the Auorra Borealis. It's typically most visible in Canada, Greenland, Iceland and some Eupoean countries.
However, every now and then they can be seen in the United States, including tonight.
The trick is to get clear skies and that could be tough with the forecast. However, if it does get clear, make sure to look up and take a gander at the Northern Lights, which are a spectacular view in the right settings.
It's truly a one-of-a-kind event.
