New York State Law Will Change Start Time for School Day

The kids seem to be going to school earlier and earlier in New York State (and some are even getting home later and later).

There is a new bill that was introduced last year that is currently in the Senate Committee. The bill will prohibit districts from having elementary kids start earlier than a certain time.

"Requires public elementary schools to start no earlier than eight a.m. and public secondary schools to start no earlier than eight thirty a.m."

Right now, there are so many districts that are in bad situations because of the transportation and bus shortage. There are not enough drivers and busses to pick up all of the schools at once. Therefore, a lot of districts have adjusted start times to accomodate the bus situation. A few districts across New York State have actually offered parents money to take their kids to school and pick them up as well and usually they were getting paid by the mile.

Parents have voiced their frustration when it comes to start times for their kids school.

Districts have not only had a challenging time with getting kids to school and home from there, but also many districts have adopted new days off. There seem to be 2 different opinions about the days off. On one hand you have some parents celebrating that districts are recognizing important days and other parents are noting that it is hard to adjust on the fly if they are not in fact federal holidays where other typical workplaces get off.
