There is another change in the weather on the way for much of New York State. The warm temperatures experienced Thursday and early Friday are about to fade, making way for colder air and snow once again. Portions of the state will be impacted by another round of lake-effect snow, reminding residents that winter is far from over.

Christmas Is Just Days Away, Will Santa Need Snow?

With Christmas just days away, kids across New York State are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Santa Claus. One big question remains: will Santa need wheels on the sleigh, or will it be old-fashioned snow as he makes his rounds on Christmas Eve?

For areas that already have a solid snowpack, Santa shouldn’t have any trouble at all. After this next round of lake-effect snow, conditions should be favorable across much of the state, making it feel a lot more like a traditional Christmas.

Snowmobiles and Skis Could See Action Soon

Did you ask Santa for a snowmobile? Maybe cross-country or downhill skis? If so, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to use them sooner rather than later.

If you do receive a snowmobile for Christmas, remember that Santa wants you to join a local snowmobile club. These clubs maintain the trail systems and determine when conditions are safe to ride. Typically, once the New Year begins and conditions improve, clubs will give the green light to enjoy the trails.

Lake-Effect Snow Returns as Temperatures Drop

According to the National Weather Service, strong winds will continue through Friday, with a significant round of lake-effect snow moving in. This type of weather can be difficult to explain to anyone who doesn’t live here. How do you go from 53 degrees and rain to bitter cold and multiple inches of snow in such a short time?

The answer lies in the Great Lakes. Lake Erie and Lake Ontario remain largely ice-free, allowing cold air to pass over the warmer waters and fuel the lake-effect snow machine.

Snowmobile Trails Need Cold Before They’re Ready

Snowmobile trails often face challenges after rain events. Water holes and muddy sections may fill in, but without a strong cold snap, they don’t always freeze solid. There’s nothing worse than cruising along a trail only to hit deep mud or open water.

Hopefully, a burst of colder air moves in soon to help freeze the trails and set the stage for the start of snowmobile season in Western New York.

Holiday Travel Could Get Tricky This Weekend

For those traveling this weekend for the holidays, be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Temperatures are expected to drop quickly, and while roads will likely be treated, slippery and hazardous spots can still develop.

Pay extra attention in areas where strong winds blow across roadways, especially along the New York State Thruway. Make sure your vehicle is winter-ready, slow down when needed, and watch for ice and debris as you head into the weekend.
