New York State ‘Raising’ ZYN Prices Per Can to $15
People are mad at New York State for trying to raise the price of nicotine packages in the near future.
To be clear, it is not exactly New York State raising the prices, it is the nicotine company, but it will be because New York State is forcing a 75% wholesale tax on nicotine pouches sold in New York State.
How much is a tin of ZYN right now?
You can get a tin of ZYN for about 10 bucks right now almost anywhere. If you go to the rez sometimes you can find them for about 8 bucks, but with the wholesale tax a tin of ZYN is expected to be somewhere up to 15 bucks. According to LoHud.com:
The Hochul administration's main argument for boosting taxes on these additional nicotine products are their adverse effects on younger New Yorkers.
In testimony provided to the Joint Legislative Budget Committee on Health in February, state Department of Taxation and Finance Acting Commissioner Amanda Hiller said having high taxes on nicotine products is intentional. "We have high taxes to create a barrier to entry for children," Hiller said. "That's always been a core rationale for having some of the highest taxes on these products in the country."
Some experts are thinking that New York State will generate nearly $50 million for the 2027 budget.
How can you tax something as a tobacco product that doesn't contain tobacco ...... but also using these is how my husband was able to quit smoking
Michele said:
She caught on to the fact that folks trying to quit smoking are ditching the extremly expensive patches and gum using pouches. If they quit smoking there goes a high tax. Wait we will tax the smoking cessation products and charge a high price! Dang they got around that also we tax the pouches
