Gas And Electric Prices Going Up In New York State
Customers of NYSEG will see an increase in their bills starting on June 1st, and the company was given approval for a temporary rate hike while the New York State Public Service Commission debates a current rate hike proposal from the company.
Starting on June 1st, the Commission is allowing NYSEG to increase electric revenue by 3.7% and a 0.5% increase for NYSEG gas revenue. Those increases will lead to around a 24% increase in electricity costs for a typical customer, and a 34% increase in heating costs for a typical customer.
The temporary rate increase is lower than the proposed rate increase that NYSEG has given the New York State Public Service Commission. NYSEG's current proposal is requesting an increase of 35% to delivery revenues or a 18.4% increase to total revenues for the rate year ending April 30, 2027.
The proposal would increase a typical NYSEG customer's bills by around $33 per month.

The third and final rate increase went into effect in May of 2025, and users paid between $5 and $11 more per month, depending on whether they use gas or electricity at their home.
Overall, electric users are paying around $25 more per month after that 3-year increase, while gas users will be paying around an extra $12 per month.
