New York State is looking to permanently keep the  speeding cameras that are up in work zones across the New York State Thruway.

The cameras are one of the most controversial subjects when it comes to drivers in New York State. You can go up to 10 miles per hour over the speed limit until one of the cameras "catches" you and then you receive a ticket in the mail and you have to pay the ticket by mail!

In 2024 there were at least 30 cameras that were set up along the New York State Thruway. Here is what you need to know:

  • Work zone speed enforcement will be located in construction or maintenance zones on New York State controlled access highways and parkways.
  • Work zones with Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement will have clear signage leading up to the work zone.
  • Each enforcement system is run through a daily self-check before capturing violations.

You can see what one of the violations looks like when it comes to your house in the mail below.

New York State Governor Kathy Hochul, during her address to New York State, mentioned that she is advocating to make the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement Program permanent, ensuring the protection of workers along the Thruway.

How much does a New York State speeding ticket cost?

  • First Violation: $50 fine
  • Second Violation: $75 fine if within an 18-month period of first violation
  • Third and Subsequent Violations: $100 fine if within an 18-month period of first violation

You can take a look at all of the details here and see exactly where all of the new speeding cameras will go up in 2025.
