What is the actual rule when it comes to what you can and cannot wear in the stadium on gameday?

A video has gone viral online of a spectator at the Buffalo Bills game on Sunday who was being told he couldn't display his shirt at the game because it was political.  Click here if you'd like to see the video.

The T-Shirt in Question

Unfortunately, we don't get to see the beginning of the conversation in the video.  However, when the video starts, you can see a man wearing a Donald Trump shirt looking for clarification on why he's not supposed to be wearing it.  Another person off-camera asks, "It's an NFL policy that he cannot wear his Trump shirt in the first row of the Bills game, right?"

The person assumably working for Highmark Stadium clarifies, "It's not a Trump shirt, it's nothing political." In other words, the policy doesn't just apply to Trump shirts.  The policy applies to all political shirts.

The NFL Rules on Political Attrire

The NFL seems to have a pretty broad code of conduct that includes the items that you cannot bring into games and essentially having respect for other spectators while you are at the game.  It's easier to find rules for the players and the game than it is to find fan conduct policies.  It appears as though the NFL leaves that up to individual teams to decide what happens in their stadium.

However, the Buffalo Bills have it written on their list of prohibited items on their website. Included alongside all of the other prohibited items is this line about clothing:

  • Clothing or material with profane language or obscene graphics or anything political in nature
