If you’re not prepared for a strong wind event, now is the time to secure loose items around your home. Western New York is expected to experience powerful wind gusts throughout Thursday as a weather front moves through the region after leaving a trail of damage across parts of the country.

Strong Winds Move Into Western New York

The weather this spring has certainly been interesting. Do you remember the extreme heat that arrived for a few days earlier this month? How about the significant rainfall we experienced throughout May and into June?

Severe Weather Leaves Damage Across the Midwest

Summer officially begins this weekend, but before we get there, we’ll have to deal with a round of potentially strong storms and gusty winds.

The same weather system impacting Western New York has already caused problems across parts of the Midwest. States including Illinois have experienced numerous tornadoes that left behind significant damage. Thanks to modern technology, storm chasers have been able to livestream these events in real time, allowing viewers to watch tornadoes form and remain on the ground for extended periods while tearing through homes, farms, and communities. The footage has been both fascinating and heartbreaking.

Tornado Risk Low, But Wind Damage Is Possible

While the Buffalo and Western New York region is not expected to face a significant tornado threat, forecasters say strong wind gusts could still create problems.

Damaged trees, downed limbs, scattered power outages, and minor structural damage are all possible if the strongest winds develop. Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor furniture, trash cans, umbrellas, and other loose objects before conditions deteriorate.

Schools Adjust Outdoor Activities

The timing of the weather is unfortunate for many students across Western New York, as schools are wrapping up the academic year and planning outdoor activities.

Several schools have already moved field days and other outdoor events indoors as Mother Nature continues to interfere with end-of-year celebrations. While students may be disappointed, school officials are prioritizing safety as the storms move through the region.

Father’s Day Weekend Forecast Looks Much Better

There is good news on the horizon.

Father’s Day weekend is expected to bring much better weather conditions across Western New York, making it a great opportunity for outdoor activities, cookouts, and family time.

Boaters, however, may want to exercise caution on Thursday. Strong winds are expected to create rough conditions and significantly larger waves on Lake Erie. If you were planning to spend time on the water, waiting an extra day could make for a much safer and more enjoyable trip.

After a stormy and windy Thursday, calmer weather should arrive just in time for Father’s Day weekend.
