If a tree has gone through your roof or you have water dripping into your dining room, you probably realize you need to call a roofer.

However, not all storm damage is immediately apparent. As we barrel through another summer storm season, my friends at Neth & Son Inc. and I want to remind you of some other signs that you might need to call a roofer:

1) Loose or missing shingles. Yes, even one or two missing shingles can cause a problem.

2) Debris from shingle granules. The little granules on top of asphalt shingles wear off little by little, but if you're missing enough that it's noticeable from the ground or that you notice the debris in your gutters or yard, it's likely time to take action.

3) The chimney looks askew. The flashing seal around the chimney can get damaged in a storm and eventually leak.

4) Damage to gutters, downspouts, soffit, fascia, or flashing. All these materials support the roof and serve important functions, so you'll want to get them fixed, too, if they are damaged in a storm.

5) Moisture or damage in the attic. If you see dark or wet spots, it could be a sign of a leak. Similarly, cracked or damaged rafters and trusses can indicate stress from a heavy snowstorm and should not be ignored.

If you notice any of these red flags, or just want assurance that a big storm didn't compromise your roof, give Neth & Son a call at (716) 685-3539 or visit nethandson.com. I've known the family for years and used the company for several of my own roofing projects. They will get the job done right the first time!
