Gas prices are skyrocketing across the United States, but the change is perhaps most obvious in New York state. 

The price of gas is up nearly 49% compared to last year. In 2020, the U.S. average price of gas was $2.19 per gallon. Today, the U.S. average is $3.27 per gallon.

To narrow it down to New York state alone, the average price is currently set at $3.35 per gallon, compared to a year ago when it was just $2.26 per gallon.

Is it supply and demand? It’s unclear; what we do know is that the price of crude oil is reaching up to $78 per barrel, and that is what is keeping gas prices high. 

A statement from OPEC+, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, confirmed that allied countries would not move forward with a previous agreement to produce more crude oil in November. 

These factors have caused an increase in gas prices locally and nationally, and it is still steadily increasing. 

In Buffalo, the price of gas is up about eight cents this week, jumping to an average price of $3.31 per gallon.
