Gas prices across New York have dipped a little this week, dropping 4 cents per gallon to an average of $4.56 for unleaded gas. Those prices are expected to spike starting on Monday as gas stations across the region have to switch over to the “Summer Blend” of gas.

Gas Station To Switch To "Summer Blend" Gas In New York State

Gas suppliers need to make the switch to the "Summer Blend" gas back in May, and now gas stations will only be allowed to sell the "Summer Blend" gas starting on June 1st.

New York requires gas producers and gas stations to switch to the "Summer Blend" of gas, which is more stable during warmer temperatures. The problem is that it costs more to produce this gas since there are more additives in it.

That increase in production usually leads to an increase in the cost of a gallon of gas at the pump. On average, the switch to the "Summer Blend" of gas can raise prices at the pump between $.10 and $.30 every summer.

Gas Prices Remain High In New York State

According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas in New York State is around $4.56. That is down slightly from last week, but up $.32 cents since last month and up over $1.40 per gallon since last year.

The ongoing war in Iran and the switch to the "Summer Blend" of gas are expected to keep prices elevated this summer.

The record high for a gallon of unleaded gas in New York State is $5.041, which he hit back on June 14, 2022.
