When we think about the people who ensure our freedom, we think about our soldiers. When we think about the people who keep us safe, we think about our law enforcement officers. Our police agencies are always working hard to keep the bad guys where they belong: behind bars.

Today is a very sad day for the men and women who wear the uniform of the New York State Police. It was exactly five years ago today that troopers Joseph Longobardo and Donald Baker Junior were shot while pursuing fugitive Ralph "Bucky" Phillips. Trooper Longobardo died from his injuries at age 32. Two months earlier, Phillips also shot trooper Sean Brown, who survived. After being on the run for five months, Phillips was eventually captured and is now serving a life sentence. [WIVB]
