A recent chat in a local suburban area of Buffalo raises a good question - how old is too old to trick or treat for Halloween?

So many of us have unforgettable memories of getting all dressed up in a fantastic costume to hit the houses in our neighborhood to stock up on snickers and smarties on Halloween night. Having a fun Halloween is a right of passage in childhood that many of us have carried over into our adult lives.

Now, Western New Yorkers go all-out decorating their houses, throwing parties, and even getting dressed up for Halloween. But if you’re an older teenager, or even (gasp!) an adult, are you considered too old to go trick or treating in Western New York?

How Old Is Too Old To Go Trick Or Treating In Western New York?

Nextdoor is a popular app for locals to communicate various issues with others in their neighborhoods. A Halloween fan posted on their local Nextdoor discussion board in Amherst, New York, asking neighbors how they felt about going out trick or treating in their local neighborhood - even though they’re older than most kids participating.

“I’m 19. Is it still ok for me to go trick or treating?”

The responses, surprisingly, were mostly positive!

“As long as you wear a costume.”

“I would prefer you trick-or-treating (in a costume) over going partying, driving under the influence or any other sort of criminal activity.”

“I agree (name redacted).   My son and his friends love to go out on Halloween.   They aren’t causing trouble and not drinking.   I see no harm.  Small minority of neighbors disagree.”

But what does the rest of Western New York think about older teenagers trick or treating?

We asked on Facebook how old was too old to go trick or treating in Western New York, and surprisingly, the responses were again positive!

The verdict is in - don’t be a Karen this Halloween. Get some extra bags of Reese’s just in case some older kids (or adults) want their sugar fix on October 31st.

Now, if you are going to hit up the neighborhood for some candy this Halloween night, you should try doing it in style in one of these costumes...
