There are only a few days left in the 2026 New York State spring turkey hunting season, and it has been an interesting month in the woods. Unseasonably wet weather has kept many hunters at home instead of in the field, with heavy rain making it difficult to get out and enjoy the season. However, for one hunter in Western New York, this spring could end up being one for the record books.

Hunting Debate Continues In Western New York

Hunting has been at the forefront of discussion across Erie County and Western New York in recent weeks. A bill that would allow 12- and 13-year-old hunters to use firearms during the fall deer season is currently awaiting further action after being vetoed by the Erie County Executive. Lawmakers will now determine whether there are enough votes to override that veto.

Turkey Hunting Remains Popular Across New York State

Hunting also plays a major role in wildlife conservation across New York State. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation does an important job issuing licenses, monitoring wildlife populations, and maintaining healthy balances among species throughout the state.

Massive Three-Bearded Gobbler Taken In Western New York

As turkey populations have grown, so have the number of mature gobblers roaming the woods. Some of these birds have become absolutely massive, including one recently harvested by a member of the Deer Tippin’ TV crew.

According to Jamie Wallschlager, he had been chasing one particular gobbler for the past four years. In a text message sent to me this past weekend, Jamie said he finally harvested the bird he had been after for years. What makes this turkey even more incredible is the fact that it has three beards.

Persistence Pays Off In The Turkey Woods

This unbelievable turkey is proof that persistence can pay off, especially when hunting gobblers that can be frustrating and unpredictable. Often, birds like this are the ones that hang up just out of range or disappear for weeks after being spotted early in the season.
