The United States Department of Treasury issued a recent warning to taxpayers about a freighting scam that is, unfortunately, way too common during tax season. The scam, which has been around some time, has evolved over time and since 2013 has stolen nearly $27 million from Americans.

According to ABC:

People pretending to be International Revenue Service (IRS) agents are making ruthless, aggressive calls, telling people they owe back taxes and threatening them if they don’t pay up immediately.

“I am going to proceed you to the sheriff's officer. And within the next hour they will be at your doorstep to handcuff you and put you behind bars,” a fraudulent caller told ABC News.

Make sure you simply hang up and notify police. Remember, the IRS will always send you a letter first to your home address and never ask you for credit card information.

Even if the scammer says you missed the letters sent to your home, hang up and call the IRS yourself immediately.
