Wegmans Faces Over $150k in Fines, Unsafe Conditions

Wegmans could reportedly face more than $188,000 in fines due to unsafe conditions for workers.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration says the company "did not ensure that each affected employee uses appropriate eye or face protection when exposed to eye or face hazards from flying particles, molten metal, liquid chemicals, acids or caustic liquids, chemical gases or vapors, or potentially injurious light radiation."

The citation references an incident this year that apparently occurred in the bakery in a Rochester location where employees were apparently not required to wear a face shield and were therefore exposed to burns. 

A worker reportedly lost a fingertip due to an incident in March, also earlier this year a mechanic sustained burns, according to Democrat & Chronicle. 

Wegmans was cited for three repeated and two serious violations with possible fines totaling $188,200.

Wegmans reportedly has until Sept. 24 to comply, request an informal conference with an OSHA director, or contest the findings, Buffalo News reports. 

The inspection cites conditions apparently similar to those cited during a 2011 inspection of the same company bakery, WIVB reports.
