West Seneca Police Say to Squash and Report This Bug If Found

It's now July and that means we are truly in the heat of the summer around in Western New York.

We have seen temperatures flirting with 90 degrees and high humidity with thunderstorms and looking at the forecast, it's nothing but high 70's and low 80's for the foreseeable future.

That means that insects will and have been out in full force. I know we have seen a fair amount of ants, mosquitos and spiders already where I live in South Buffalo, near the border of Lackawanna and West Seneca. Some bugs are more of a nuisance than anything, but there's now one bug that has been spotted in Western New York that people should be aware of.

The Town of West Seneca posted on Facebook that the dreaded Spotted Lanternfly was recently spotted near Sunshine Park in West Seneca.

Sunshine Park is located down the road from Fireman's Park on East and West Road, between Southwestern Blvd. and Union Road.

The West Seneca Police went so far as to say to squash the Spotted Lanternfly if you see it. You also should report the sighting to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

The spotted lanternfly is an extremely invasive bug, which can destroy crops and cause havoc on the environment.

If you see the spotted lanternfly in West Seneca or anywhere in Western New York, make sure to report it to the New York State DEC, so they can note when and where it was seen.
