It’s been nearly a year since New York State dealt with a shortage of rock salt and ice melter during a stretch of relentless winter storms. Now, in 2026, another round of heavy snow and bitter cold has hit the region, and it looks like we may be facing a different kind of winter shortage. This time, it could make driving even more difficult than usual.

Winter Driving in Western New York Comes with Unique Challenges

Snow is beautiful when you’re watching it from inside your home or office. For those who work outdoors in these brutal conditions, we owe you our gratitude. The frigid temperatures are dangerous, and the people who brave them every day deserve recognition.

But for the rest of us who spend a lot of time on the roads, there’s another serious winter challenge that many parts of the country never experience.

That constant spray from vehicles ahead of you, mixed with road salt, slush, and grime, quickly coats your windshield. In these freezing temperatures, it either dries instantly or freezes in place, making it extremely difficult to see. Even with your wipers running constantly, the buildup can become a major visibility hazard.

Why You Go Through So Much Washer Fluid in Buffalo Winters

If you’re like me, you go through gallons of windshield washer fluid every winter. Driving with a dirty windshield is not only frustrating, it can be unsafe. Clear visibility is essential, especially during lake-effect snow events and whiteout conditions common in Buffalo and Western New York.

Recently, I went to refill the washer fluid in my wife’s car and decided to top off my truck as well. I stopped at multiple stores and gas stations, and to my surprise, there was barely any washer fluid left on the shelves.

While supplies will likely be restocked soon, this is just another example of the unique winter problems we face living in Buffalo, New York. With extended periods of extreme cold and heavy salt use on the roads, we’re using more washer fluid than ever before.

I often wonder what drivers in southern states, where snow is rare, would think about how much washer fluid we go through. Some vehicles down south may never go through a full reservoir in their lifetime!

Stock Up Now Before Supplies Run Low

Here in Buffalo, we’re used to winter extremes. Whether it’s sitting through a snowstorm at a football game or walking through one to get to school, winter is part of our identity.

But it’s still frustrating when essential winter supplies are hard to find.

My recommendation? Stock up now. Every time you buy one gallon of washer fluid, grab a second. The same goes for road salt, ice melt, and even extra propane for the grill. Having extra supplies on hand can reduce stress and make winter a lot more manageable.

In Western New York, being prepared isn’t optional, it’s a way of life.
