Before most baseball games and hockey games, there is an announcement made to pay attention as a ball or puck may fly in to the crowd.Here is an example of why. This woman was returning to her seat behind home plate and took a foul ball to her head. The game was halted for some time while she was attended to.

You have to wonder why there is not a stronger fence/net of some sort to protect fans.
