He's been a trusted auto dealer for years at Mike Barney Nissan, you hear his voice on all their commercials, but Joe Caldarelli has another passion you probably didn't know about.  Joe loves to cook and when an opportunity to buy the Colden Market & Café came up last year - he didn't think twice.

The Colden Market & Café is celebrating its one year anniversary this weekend and I was invited to stop out and try some of their food.  I've known Joe since I bought my first car from him about 12 years ago and he was so kind as to present me with a gift of 40 fish fry dinners as part of my 40-year anniversary celebration party a few weeks ago.  I was really impressed when I stopped in on Friday night.

What they've created there in a short time is a social gathering place for the community.  For those who want to stop in for a quick bite to eat or just to pick up a few groceries, a half gallon of milk, some cold cuts and snacks it's a friendly place where everybody seems to know one another.

Among the specialties that Joe makes himself are soup from scratch and chicken pot pies.  Joe says he rolls out the dough himself and makes about 75 chicken pot pies each week.  In the winter the number jumps to about 100.  And even in the summer he has people stop in for his soup.  It's gotten to the point where he has to post his soup selections in the outside window of the market so people can see what he's offering as they drive in.

My fish fry included a generous portion of Icelandic haddock fish with fries and a choice of two of three sides, cole slaw, macaroni salad or potato salad along with a slice of marble rye bread and butter. It was delicious and more than I could eat.

They also do a brisk business with pizza, subs and sandwiches, wings and fingers and fresh salads.  If comfort food is your thing you'll find meatloaf, pasta and meatballs, pork chops, roast pork and pot roast dinners.  Eat it there or take it home.  They even deliver.
