According to the most recent data, these 10 Buffalo schools had the most reported incidents of assaults and weapons on campus. In light of the recent shooting at McKinley High School, I wanted to take a look at the number of violent occurrences on campuses here in the city.

Yesterday, February 9, 2022, a guard was shot in the leg and a 14-year-old student was stabbed in a parking lot.

Dr. Kiner Cash, Superintendant of Buffalo Public Schools released a statement about the incident and announced that the school will go to remote learning for three days,

A violent incident occurred outside McKinley high school at or around dismissal time today. One student and one security officer were wounded. The Buffalo Police Department was on the scene immediately with all of their considerable resources applied to manage the scene and investigate the incident. We are grateful to Mayor Byron Brown and the BPD, the State Police, the Sheriff's Department, and the FBI for their extraordinary partnership. Our thoughts and prayers are with the student, the security officer, their families and the entire McKinley school community at this time. Follow-up information regarding the incident will come from the BPD.
The school district will place McKinley High School into a remote learning environment through the end of the week (2/10 - 2/11) to provide online counseling and other socioemotional supports while we continue building out a comprehensive plan to re-open the school. Grief counseling and online SEL teaching resources will be provided to all students, parents, and teachers of the BPS anticipating the trauma this incident has had on all of us. Together, we will help each other through.

There have been other incidents of violence at McKinley recently. On January 25, a female teacher was sent to the hospital after breaking up a fight between students. According to news reports, there were multiple fights between students leading up to the incident involving the teacher. Between Monday and Tuesday of that week, there were four fights at McKinley High School in Buffalo.

When reviewing the list below, keep in mind these are only the most recent reported incidents, there may be situations that were never officially reported. This list is based solely on one school year, which was partially during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many students were learning remotely. Each of the school's enrollment is listed next to the number of incidents.  The data does not provide any information about the scope of the assault or what type of weapon was found.

These 10 schools had the highest number of assaults and weapons on campus for the 2019-2020 school year, which is the most recent published data.
The totals below include the combined number of each of the following incidents: Assault - Physical Injury, Assault - Serious Physical Injury, Weapons Possession: Routine Security Check, and Weapons Possession: Other.
