There are some events that happen in Western New York that you just won’t find anywhere else, and we can add another one to the list.

With homecoming weekend right around the corner, Clay & Company on 106.5 WYRK were reminiscing with memories from their time in high school, and it led to an interesting phone call with a Lancaster High School graduate.

A woman called from the Lancaster High School Class of ‘88, and she told us that there was an event at her high school called “The Donkey Ball.” If you know someone who goes to Lancaster now, they will most likely be confused if you approach them about the “Donkey Ball” since it was something the school did years ago.

But what is it? Is it a dance with donkeys? A ballroom you take donkeys to?

Sort of….

If by “dance,” you thought of Michael Jordan’s “The Last Dance,” you’d be correct!

The Donkey Ball was actually a basketball game played with…you guessed it – donkeys!

We asked the Lancaster/Depew Neighbors Helping Neighbors Facebook page to see if anyone had pictures to show the Donkey Basketball tradition, and thanks to Yvonne Calabro, we have yearbook photos from back in 1987!

Take a look at the fun memories created with Donkey Ball.

Back in the '80s, there was an iconic tradition at Lancaster High School where students would play in a basketball game with donkeys. Take a look at some of the pictures from February 18, 1987.

I know what you’re thinking…would the donkeys scuff up the gymnasium floor? We found out from a classmate in the Class of 1988 that the donkeys would wear little booties to prevent the gym floor damage.

Obviously, times have changed and “Donkey Ball” is no longer a Lancaster tradition, but it’s definitely a tradition that shouldn’t be forgotten!
