It seems to be the trend for colleges and universities these days.  Unfortunately due to low enrollment, colleges are having to cut programs.

It was just a few weeks ago that we got the news about Fredonia having to cut programs due to low enrollment numbers and a large deficit that needed to be reduced.  Today, we got the news that Buffalo State University will be doing the same.

Buffalo State University is cutting programs

Buff State has announced that they will be deactivating and discontinuing 37 programs.  They include, but are not limited to Biology, Chemistry, Early Childhood Education, and more.  The good news is that the programs that will be cut are considered under performing programs and they will only affect 34 students.  Also, those students will have the opportunity to still complete the program if they are already enrolled.

There are more programs under review

They continued to mention more programs that are currently under review and are being considered for deactivation as of the Spring of 2025 semester.  Those programs include:

  • Applied Math, B.S.
  • Ethics, minor
  • Gerontology, minor
  • GIS, minor
  • Mathematical Logic, certificate
  • Non-Spanish and Chinese Concentrations, certificate
  • Printmaking, minor
  • Printmaking Concentration, concentrations in B.F.A. and B.A.
  • Religious Studies, minor
  • Statistics in Insurance, certificate

Decrease in enrollment is the reason for the cuts

One of the biggest reasons that many of these programs are being cut is the lack of new enrollment.  According to Spectrum News, the school has seen a decrease in enrollment of 42% over the past 10 years.  However, they saw an increase in first-time undergrad enrollment in fall 2023.
