It’s always sad to see a local business close its doors, and it seems like so many are ceasing operations in 2024.

While there are so many reasons that can cause a business to ultimately close down, one of the most common struggles over the last few years is finding dedicated staffing. It seems like everywhere you go, there is a “Hiring Now!” sign.

Part of the struggle that new businesses will face is the start up costs. On average, it will take a business between two to three years to become profitable, according to FreshBooks.

And not to continue with the negativity, but approximately 25% of new businesses will fail in their first year, according to the Small Business Administration. After the first year, about 50% of the remaining businesses will make it to the five-year mark.

So it is possible to stay open for a really long time! However, certain factors, such as poor location, lack of business management experience, insufficient start-up funds, limited staffing, lack of budgeting, or other various reasons can cause a business to close unexpectedly.

Unfortunately, we have lost 16 local businesses in Western New York in 2024, and we’re only three months into the year!

Take a look at some of the businesses that have closed down over the last few months.
