Coach McDermott Responds To Diggs Hot Mic Drama
A Buffalo Bills team reporter was caught on a hot mic following the season opener for the Buffalo Bills.
The reporter made a few joking comments about Stefon Diggs, wide receiver for the Bills, while waiting for the player(s) to join the media in the press room.
Before the press briefing began, Buffalo Bills reporter Maddy Gab could be heard on the microphone saying “There’s no control over Stefon Diggs. Dude’s gonna do what he wants to do. He’ll look in my face and say, ‘F you.’ How he treats everybody.”
Glab immediately issued an apology on X, formerly known as Twitter, and explained that it was a joke because another reporter told her to go get him out of the locker room.
You can read her statement below.
Within an hour, the hot mic video had been viewed more than 250,000 times.
Another reporter, who has not been identified, seemed to be laughing along with Maddy, indicating that it was just a joke.
Glab explained the details of the joke for context.
“Media was waiting for players to come out for press conferences when a reporter joking told me to go get Stefon Diggs,” she wrote. “I said I don’t have control over him – Stef marches to the beat of his own drum and I love that about him. He has a playful relationship with our video department, so that’s why I said he probably wouldn’t say yes to me grabbing him for an interview. I should not have said what I said, and I apologize for that. Stef is not in the wrong, I am.”
Others, however, feel differently, including Diggs. His tweets indicate that he felt that her comments were detrimental to his character.
Since then, people have been pretty split as to what should happen, but it’s worth noting that Maddy Glab did not attend the home opener on Sunday, Sept. 17.
Also, the post-game show (which is normally hosted by Glab) was instead hosted by Chris Brown over the weekend.
Brown is the co-host of One Bills Live and part of the “Bills By The Numbers” podcast.
Bills head coach Sean McDermott mentioned those conflicts last week, and he commended Stefon Diggs for how he handled the situation with the reporter and those on social media who were saying all kinds of things about him and Maddy Glab.
Coach McDermott spoke with The MMBQ’s Albert Breer on Sunday, according to Heavy.com.
Sean McDermott said of Stefon Diggs: “The guy loves football. He’s got a really unselfish approach. That could have, if he didn’t handle it the right way, become a distraction. It was to begin with. But it could have become a bigger one.”
The Bills are looking forward to their next game against the Washington Commanders on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 1:00 PM.
