The days of eating over processed foods in school may be coming to an end soon in Western New York. That is if lawmakers in New York State follow the path that California is on. There is a ban that is looming that aims to protect kids from eating what some consider to be poison.

Looking back to when you went to school, do you remember the types of food that was served? I will never forget the taco in a bag and cheeseburgers and that amazing school lunch pizza! All of which were probably loaded with grease. But as many of us say, "we made it this far".

But fast forward 20 or 30 years after graduation and we know so much more about the food we eat and the ingredients they contain. The additives tend to be the worst part of the ingredients. For example, some kids have bad reactions to certain dyes and fake sugars that some of these foods contain.

California seems to be leading the way to make a substantial change to the school lunch menus and New York State, and other states are likely not far behind.

A Ban On Ultra Processed Foods

According to reports, California has a ten year plan to eliminate and ban ultra processed foods from schools.

The San Fransico Chronicle reports that: "California on Wednesday became the first state in the U.S. to ban ultra-processed food in school lunches — including soda, energy drinks and other foods high in sugar or salt and low in nutrients".

With four kids under 9 years old, we are very aware of what our kids eat. Getting them to eat "healthier" foods is always a challenge and our kids don't do well with foods that contain red dyes. We typically pack their lunches but they do love the breakfast foods that the school offers!
