Every Summer gas companies need to mix a special blend of gas called "Summer Blend" that doesn't evaporate from gas tanks in warmer weather.
Every year the Environmental Protection Agency requires gas companies to produce a different blend of gasoline to be sold in the summer months than in the winter months.

The blend created has lower volatility, making it less likely to evaporate while sitting in your car’s gas tank in the heat. It is also less likely to emit harmful fumes into the atmosphere. During the winter months, the Winter blend gas has higher volatility, making it easier to ignite and start your car in colder temperatures.
The cost to make the summer blend gas is more expensive for the companies so they pass on that expense to the consumer. The deadline to make the switch to the summer blend is June 1st, but many gas companies make the switch starting during the month of March.
On average, the cost to produce and deliver the summer blend of gas is about 15 cents more expensive than the cost of the winter blend according to the website gasbuddy.com.
The dates that gas stations have to sell the summer blend of gas runs from June 1st until September 15th. The blend of gas varies from region to region and is based on state laws which means some areas of the country will pay more or less than the average based on those factors.
