If it seems to you like this summer is a lot warmer than usual, you’re not alone.

For a city that is perpetually known for its abundance of snow and freezing temperatures in the winter, here in Buffalo, we seem to have had several bouts of steamy hot weather these past few months.

It seems like this year, we turned on our air conditioners and fans earlier than ever (and we’ve sweated through more shirts than we care to admit). Thankfully, July isn’t as brutally hot as those 90-degree days this past June, although we could have done without those severe thunderstorms and tornadoes we dealt with over the last two weeks.

Even when we look back on this past winter, we admit that we came out relatively unscathed when it came to snowfall and cold weather.

Still, is it just us, or is this year one of the hottest we can remember in Buffalo?

2024 Could Be The Warmest Year In Buffalo History

Don’t feel guilty about cranking up the air conditioning. According to the National Weather Service, the Buffalo region is off to its warmest start in 2024 since they began keeping temperature records in the 1870’s.

Tracking January through June of this year, the NWS’s data shows that 5 out of 6 months rank in the top 10 warmest on record. To put it in perspective, here’s the average high temperatures for each month so far this year in Buffalo.

2024 Monthly Average Temperatures In Buffalo

January: 52°

February: 68°

March: 72°

April: 78°

May: 86°

June: 93°

Worldwide, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), 2023 was officially the warmest year on record by far. However, it’s looking more and more like 2024 will demolish that record.

For fans of the hot and sticky summer season, you can rejoice. It doesn’t look like these warm Western New York temperatures are going away any time soon. But if you’d rather be chilly when stepping outdoors than sweaty, you might be out of luck. Maybe start planning a move to the Arctic?
