The winter is here, and many of us who love to hunt are already waiting for the next season. Here in New York State, the small game season rolls on for a few more days.

But for those who are massive fans of hunting Whitetail Deer, the season never really ends. Even on the coldest day, hunters are planning out strategies for the next season and keeping their skills sharp with a bow or rifle.

There are few things more exciting than taking a big buck after all of the hard work pays off.

What Moisture Can Do To A Deer

I had the unfortunate occasion to find out firsthand that moisture and lack of proper ventilation can really damage your trophy. This past fall, I noticed that all of my deer mounts were covered in a layer of mold and mildew. Our cabin was so airtight that it had zero ventilation, creating the ideal conditions for mold to spread.

After a quick trip to the local taxidermist, I did my best to remove the mildew before it got worse! Thankfully, with some sunlight, fresh air, and elbow grease, I was able to get them back in the proper condition.

After the deer was cleaned up, I made sure that our cabin had a new vent installed with a solar-powered fan that kept the air circulating enough to help keep the mildew threat down. I also sprayed them with a mold preventative.
