The 2024 New York State deer hunting season has entered it's second month and there is a shift that has taken place.

The weather has changed, for the better for deer hunters, as the cooler air has arrived! As we set the clocks back, and the whitetail bucks start to move, deer hunters in New York State are getting ideal conditions!

But as November begins, it brings with it the start of a new season for hunters in New York State which has gotten both positive and negative reactions.

MASSIVE HUNTING LAW CHANGE FOR NEW YORK STATE

The deer activity has been slow, for the most part this season. Hunters that we have spoken with tell us the warm temps were not been great for October's archery hunt.

However, as of November 2nd, those who choose to hunt with a crossbow can head to their tree stands in portions of New York State. The weather has changed and, based on what I saw in the last couple of days, the deer have also changed their daily routine.

CROSSBOW SEASON IN NEW YORK STATE

Hunting with a crossbow is one of the most debated and discussed topics among hunters in New York State. For those who are traditionalists, archery season should remain as a season just for those who hunt with a longbow, recurve or compound bow. However, the accuracy and speed of a crossbow is pretty amazing and if you have ever shot one, it is smooth.

New York State describes a legal crossbow as: "A legal crossbow consists of a bow and string, either compound or recurve, that launches a minimum 14-inch bolt or arrow, not including point, mounted upon a stock with a trigger that holds the string and limbs under tension until released".

While there are many laws regarding the use of and type of crossbow in New York State, the one that stands out is "Bowhunting privilege is not required for use of a crossbow at any time".

Good luck to those who are headed out to the woods this season. The bucks are starting to chase and the midday hunting has also gotten better!
