As New York State heads toward the end of February, homeowners across the state are facing a hidden danger caused by this winter’s relentless snow and ice. After weeks of heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures, many residents are now dealing with a problem they haven’t seen in years, or ever before. If you act quickly, you can protect your home and your family.

Rising Temperatures, Rain, and Heavy Snowpack on New York Roofs

The forecast calls for temperatures to rise again across New York State, with some areas expecting steady rain and others seeing a mix of rain and freezing rain. Regardless of where you live, chances are there has been a significant snowpack sitting on your roof for weeks.

As that snow begins to melt, the risk of roof leaks, ice dam damage, and interior water issues increases dramatically.

A Costly Surprise: When a “New” Roof Starts Leaking

We experienced this firsthand.

Last Friday night, as we were getting ready for bed, we noticed the mattress was wet. Our first thought? The dog. My wife even joked that it would have been the first time we actually hoped it was the dog.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t. The ceiling was leaking, badly.

The hardest part to accept was that we had installed a brand-new roof just a few months ago. While we are still working to determine what went wrong, the immediate issue became dealing with the damage left behind.

What To Do If You Notice a Leak or Water Stain

If you see a leak forming or notice water stains spreading across your ceiling, do not ignore it.

Contact a professional immediately to assess the situation. What looks like a small leak could be much worse behind the drywall.

In our case, we initially punched a hole in the ceiling near the worst leak, hoping we could simply patch the damage. Instead, water began pouring through the opening. The damage was far more extensive than we expected. The entire ceiling had to be removed. Insulation had to be torn out. Industrial fans were brought in to dry the joists and rafters above.

Had we waited, mold growth could have become a serious issue, creating an even bigger and more expensive problem.

Ice Dams, Poor Ventilation, and Other Causes of Roof Leaks

If your home still has ice buildup along the roofline, contact a professional to remove it safely. Improper removal can cause even more roof damage.

There are several common reasons why leaks occur during a New York winter thaw:

  • Improper roof installation
  • Ice dams forming along gutters
  • Hidden holes or flashing issues
  • Poor attic ventilation
  • Insufficient insulation

No matter the cause, water intrusion should never be ignored.

Don’t Wait — Address Winter Water Damage Immediately

Even a small amount of water entering your home can signal a much larger issue. Delaying repairs can lead to structural damage, insulation failure, and dangerous mold growth.

As temperatures rise and snow begins melting across New York State, now is the time to inspect your roof, attic, and ceilings. Acting quickly could save you thousands of dollars, and protect your home before the next round of rain or freezing weather arrives.

If you suspect a problem, have it checked right away. What you can’t see may already be causing damage.
