Everyone loves donuts.  I wouldn't trust someone who said they didn't.  Donuts are delicious.  But what is America's favorite type of donut?

They're fried cake for heaven's sake, and we get to eat them for breakfast??  A little sugar and some carbs to start the day?  Sign me up.  Donuts are delicious.  Did I say that already?

Today is National Donut Day!  While it feels like a day set aside by sugar junkies to give an excuse to eat more donuts, there's actually a historical meaning behind this one.

Donut Day started back in 1938 as a fundraiser for The Salvation Army in Chicago and to recognize the work of Salvation Army volunteers (called Lassies) who used doughnuts to comfort American soldiers in France and Germany during World War I.

I mean...I'm not one to pass up on participation during such a historic day.  So...where can we get some deals for donut day?

Paula's Donuts is offering a free donut with a beverage purchase...

Tim Hortons has 3 new types of donuts to try...

If you're near Krispy Kreme, they have a free donut offer...

Dunkin Donuts is offering a free donut with a beverage purchase...

And what are people's favorites?

Glazed . . . Boston cream . . . chocolate frosted . . . jelly . . . chocolate cake . . . maple . . . blueberry . . . bear claw . . . powdered sugar . . . and pink frosted.

So get out there and eat some donuts today.  It's not every day that you can sit there and binge on sugar and carbs and say you're doing it for the sake of history.
