The arrival of warmer weather in Western New York means that there is a lot more activity happening all around the region. From concerts, shows, and events, to family gatherings and road trips, spring and summer in Buffalo mean a lot more folks are coming out of our long winter hibernation to spend more time outside.

Of course, it's not all fun in the sun, and sometimes people will go out and make bad decisions. Unfortunately, often, one of those bad decisions includes drugs and alcohol and getting behind the wheel.

Just this past January alone, New York State Police issued nearly 1,000 tickets for impaired driving, and those citations were issued in just one week. Because drunk and high driving is such an issue, Police Agencies in Western New York teamed up to do something about it.

Erie County Sheriff's Office Checked Thousands Of Vehicles For Impaired Drivers

On Thursday, June 25, 2026, the Erie County Sheriff's Office teamed up with the Buffalo Police, New York State Police, and STOP-DWI to do a DUI/DWI checkpoint in downtown Buffalo.

The checkpoint, which occurred during the early evening and lasted a few hours, happened right at the onramp to NY33, which is better known as the Kensington Expressway.

Over the course of several hours, thousands of vehicles were checked for impaired driving, along with other violations. The checkpoint, which was funded by a grant that the ECSO received, resulted in one DWI arrest, according to department officials.

Given the number of people who are killed and injured by drunk and high drivers, one less impaired driver on the road makes the region better for all of us.
