Uniland Developing Major Campus in Buffalo New York?

In a move that may indicate that Uniland Development Co. has been tapped as the designated developer for Buffalo’s new public works campus, the Amherst-based company is seeking the first of city approvals needed for the project to advance.

Uniland is on the Buffalo Planning Board’s May 6 agenda to discuss prepping 62 vacant parcels at 2 Bailey Ave. into the new public works campus. The land is owned by railroad behemoth Norfolk Southern Corp. and Uniland has the property under contract, pending an official designated developer status from Mayor Byron Brown’s administration.

Ryan Weisz, Uniland senior marketing manager, confirmed that the development company will be meeting with the city planning board about the proposed public works campus.

“ We feel we have a strong development proposal and have been contacted by the city with questions,” Weisz said.

Uniland was one of several development firms that responded to city-issued RFP (request for proposals) issued last year.

Weisz added Uniland is negotiating with Norfolk Southern for vacant land near the city’s Bailey Avenue/Dingens Street neighborhood.

The new public works campus would replace the aging but historic Broadway Barns, located just east of downtown Buffalo’s central business district.

Last fall, the city designated a development team led by Silo City developer Anthony Cherry, Bellwether Advisors Danielle Shainbrown and Nicole Roman, Carmina Wood Design and Hallmark Planning & Development to transform the Broadway Barns into a mixed-used complex with recreational, residential and some retail components.
The Broadway Barns project won’t begin until the new public works campus has been developed, which should completed by 2026.
