This week, you can expect to hear the rumble of low-flying planes across Western New York. Every social media town page will have people asking the question, "Did You See Them? What is up with all the low-flying planes?" Well, here is the answer.

Low Flying Planes Expected This Week In Western New York

Just a week after we saw multiple helicopters in the sky across Western New York, this week you can expect to see low-flying planes. It is all part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture rabies vaccines program in Niagara County and parts of Western New York.

It started last week with helicopters and will continue this week with low-flying planes. The planes will drop off the vaccine baits in hard-to-reach areas in order to better spread the rabies vaccines among wildlife. Planes will be used for this week, and then personal ground bait traps will be dropped next week. The baits will be placed by people in more densely populated areas.

All the baits should be issued by May 22nd.

Do Not Touch The Bait

Officials with the health department warn people that they should Not Touch these tablets when they are dropped. If you do come in contact with one of these packets, you need to call the NYSDOH Rabies Information Line (888) 574-6656 with questions or concerns.

Most packets will be eaten by wildlife within four days; almost all baits will be gone within a week. If packets are not found and eaten, they will harmlessly dissolve, and the exposed vaccine will become inactivated.
