A bill that would require proof of citizenship in order to register to vote is now one step closer to becoming a law. The Save America Act bill would require anyone who wants to register to vote to show proof that they are a US citizen by showing a US passport or a birth certificate.

US House Passes SAVE America Act

On Wednesday, the Republican controled US House of Representatives passed the SAVE America Act. Every republican representive voted for the bill along with one democratic representative, Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas. Every other Democratic representative voted against the bill. The bill passed 218-213.

The Bill requires states to obtain documentary proof-of-citizenship in person. Potential voters would have to show items like an American passport or birth certificate in order to register to vote in a federal election.

The bill also requires voters to show photo identification in order to cast a ballot in person. It also adds new rules for mail-in ballots, requiring voters to submit a copy of an eligible ID when requesting and casting an absentee ballot.

SAVE America Act Headed To US Senate

The Bill will now head to the US Senate to be voted on. It is expected to pass as Republicans hold the majority in the US Senate. If it does pass, the bill then be sent to President Donald Trump to be signed into law.

If signed into law, it could be enforced as early as this November's elections.
