Environmentalist are portraying a recent algae bloom in western Lake Erie as the worst bloom to ever hit the lake.

Blamed on agricultural runoff, this massive bloom threatens to cause a sharp decline in the population of Walleye throughout the entire lake as well as explode the numbers of quagga and zebra mussels.

Those of us in the eastern half of Lake Erie say the lake has never looked cleaner but experts are calling this an "optical illusion". The bloom currently reaches from the Michigan shoreline eastward to just north of Cleveland. The bloom in some areas is reported to be two feet thick and has caused beaches to be closed due to high toxin levels.

The last time Lake Erie faced a bloom anything to this magnitude was back in the 1960's. At that time environmentalist declared lake Erie to be dead.
